Church cleaning The sanctuary is cleaned by teams of volunteers. We are looking for more people to add to these teams. The commitment for this is approximately one hour in a morning every 5 weeks. If you can help, please contact Janis Clark via the church office. Ongoing opportunities Juice Bottles Arbroath High School are collecting plastic bottles for a project and need hundreds of them! Can you help? These are their requirements:
Eco-action - recycling plastic/metal lids Receptacles are available in the gallery after church each Sunday for you to deposit the coloured tops from plastic milk bottles and metal lids from jars for recycling. Thanks to all those who have contributed to this project - please keep them coming! You may think that this is just a drop in the ocean - but then, the ocean is made up entirely of drops... Attention all knitters! The Special Care Baby Unit at Ninewells Hospital is asking for bonnets and matiness jackets for premature babies. We always get a great response when we ask for knitted items. If you can help, contact the church office for a copy of the patterns. Havilah games/crafts We would like some jigsaws, preferably no more than 500 pieces, and some jigsaw rolls or boards for storing partly completed jigsaws. Also looking for size 8 (4mm) knitting needles and double knitting wool of any colour. We are planning to knit squares to make blankets to send overseas. Please see Karen Reaney or Norma Cox if you can help. Mike's Buggies This charity is the brainchild of Mike Rennie and its aim is to encourage young people to get off the streets and steer away from alcohol and drugs through becoming involved in designing and building off-road buggies. They are looking for any mechanical tools you may have spare. See Mike if you can help. Mike would like to thank all those who have supported him recently in prayer or by donation. He now has premises secured. Mobile Phones wanted Do you have an old mobile hiding in a cupboard? We are collecting used phones to recycle and raise money for our Malawi projects. The condition of the phone isn't important, as long at it's not totally trashed! Hand to any of the Malawi team. Toiletries for women's refuge Often when a woman turns up at our local refuge, she has nothing with her - not even a toothbrush. We have already delivered 25 small bags of toiletries, each with a message and details of St Andrew's church, and would like to make another delivery in the spring. If you have small toiletries that are unwanted gifts or brought home from hotels while travelling, please hand them in at the office or to any member of the Service Core Group. There will also be a box for donations at the church. This is a way of showing love and care at a very stressful time in the lives of these women. Kitchen/serving help Volunteers are needed to help at Messy Church each month. This would involve food preparation, table setting and serving. Messy Church is held on the last Sunday of each month. Anyone who can help should see Doris Bowie or ask at the church office. Child Sponsorship We have a number of children from St Andrew's Daycare Centre available to be sponsored. If anyone in the congregation, or anyone from the wider community whom you know of, is interested in becoming a sponsor, please speak to Sheila Dunphy or ask at the church office. House Groups If you're not attending a group and would like to start, or if you already attend a group and need to change to a different one, please speak to Lawrence Davie or contact the church office. Prayer Teams Prayer is a vital part of St Andrew's church life, and you have an open invitation to join any of our regular prayer teams:
Events team Our buildings are used by many different organisations and for many of our own events, so we have an events team of volunteers who are on call to provide hosting and stewarding support for these events. If you would like to join this team, please contact our Session Clerk, Jane Miller, via the church office. No minimum time commitment is required - you are free to accept or decline any request to help at a particular event. More details can be found in the February 2010 edition of Quest, our monthly magazine. Food parcels project We are looking for more volunteers to staff this project, providing short-term food assistance to people in need in our community. You will work in partnership with another volunteer once every three weeks and the duties are simple - we provide a welcome to people who are referred to us for practical help when they're in a crisis. Please contact Fay Forge, the co-ordinator of the project, via the church office if this is something you would like to help with. Arbroath Academy Paired Readers Paired reading is a valued service for struggling readers. Training and support provided - contact the church office if you feel this is a service opportunity for you. Starter Packs supplies and volunteers Volunteer drivers are needed - flexible hours to suit you. At present the particular needs are bath towels, bedding and curtains, and kitchen utensils are always needed. Please leave donations in the box at worship services, or take directly to Starter Packs in Wardmill Rd. SPA have also made a request for two members of our congregation to serve on their Board. This would entail a commitment of two hours every second month. Please contact the church office if you're interested. Church Watch and Pastoral Care If you notice anyone hasn't been at church for a couple of weeks or if you know of someone who is ill or in need of pastoral care, please see Kim Marr after the service. Flower Club - new members and contributions The Flower Club would love to have some new members to join them. Even if you have no experience at all, you will be made welcome and can learn as you go along. The Flower Club meets at 7.30pm at the church fortnightly on a Monday. Speak to any member of the Flower Club or contact the church office for more details. The Flower Club provide the arrangements for the service each Sunday and distribute these to people in need of the lift that a gift of flowers can give. If you have any baskets that you could donate to the Flower Club, please bring them to church on Sunday morning or drop them into the church office. If you would like to donate the floral arrangement on a specific date, or contribute towards the cost of an arrangement, please speak to a member of the flower club or contact the church office. OB's needs Staff and volunteers from OBs go out into the streets of Arbroath and chat with groups of young people with the aim of getting to know them and building relationships. There is also some involvement with the Saltire Centre. If you would like to be involved in this type of outreach, please speak to Sheila Dunphy. Malawi - Skills and Services catalogue Our young people are working hard to raise funds for supporting our Malawi project. They are offering their skills and services such as gardening, ironing, cleaning, dog walking, babysitting, shopping, car washing and more. Pick up a brochure at church. Contact the Elderly - hosts and drivers This charity organises monthly afternoon teas in people's homes for older people who have limited social contacts with family or friends. They need hosts with a downstairs loo, not to many steps, a big teapot and a warm smile! They also need drivers with their own car capable of transporting two or three people, who can join in with the afternoon tea. Contact Jean Malcolm via the church office to volunteer. |
