Plan
Each part of the teaching is framed in the form of a question to which, in each case, there is a response. The following is an outline of the themes that will be covered, with links to the message summary of the ones we've already done.
Who am I? | I am a child of God. I belong to God and he loves me! |
Don't you have to be good to be loved by God? | No-It's a free gift that can't be earned and isn't deserved. |
Wow! How can I say 'thank you'? | By loving, trusting, worshipping and obeying God. |
What is special about human beings. What does it mean to be made in the image of God? | That we're unique, made to reflect God's goodness and love. |
Why, then, do we humans mess up? | Sin-we've turned away from God. |
What are the results of sin? | Our relationship with God-and others-is broken. It leads us into death, not life. |
What is God's response to sin? | He hates it but never stops loving us. To prove it, he founded the covenant. |
What is the covenant? | A sign of God's 'give-away' love and our responsibility to him. |
What are The Ten Commandments?
|
'The Instructions on the side of the packet!' The Maker's manual for life. (this will be covered in 3 parts) He hates our sin but never stops loving us. The principle of keeping a day each week to rest and to worship God. Being discontented with what we have and jealous of what others have. |
Did the people keep the covenant? | Too often, they were unfaithful. |
So, did God give up on them? | No, God kept reaching out-through prophets and priests-remaining faithful. Then came the promise of the Messiah. |
Who was sent to be the Messiah? | Jesus, the 'Christ' God's promised one. |
Was Jesus just another human being? | No. Jesus was truly human and yet the exact likeness of God! |
What was Jesus like? What did he do? | He spoke with authority, acting in love and power. He gave witness to the arrival of God's Kingdom. |
How is Jesus our Saviour? | By his death on the cross. |
What does it mean to say that Jesus is Lord? | That he was raised from death and is now ruler of all things. |
What does it mean that Jesus ascended into heaven? | That Jesus is at one with God and has gone to prepare a place with God for us. |
What happened at Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came? | The first Christians were 'set on fire' and began to preach the Gospel. |
What is the Gospel? | The Good News about Jesus, the promise of forgiveness and eternal life. |
How do I know the Good News and what difference does it make? | Through reading the Bible and hearing it preached. It lets me know that nothing will ever separate me from God's love. |
How does the Holy Spirit continue to work today? | By opening us to the Gospel, strengthening us to live by it, and calling us into God's community, the Church. |
What is the Church? | The people who believe the Good News about Jesus! |
What else does the Holy Spirit do for the Church? | The Spirit gathers us in worship, builds us up in faith and sends us in to the world as witnesses of God's love. |
What do we do in worship? | We adore and praise God! We listen to God. We thank God. We celebrate the sacraments. |
What is a sacrament? | A visible sign of God's grace and love. |
What sacraments are there? | Baptism and The Lord's Supper. |
Why do we pray to God? | To be near to him that we might give him thanks and seek his guidance. |
What do we when we pray? | We say Thank you, Sorry, Please. |
What is the Lord's Prayer? | (this will be covered in 3 parts) |
Why does our prayer end with 'Amen'? | It means 'so be it!' It expresses our complete confidence in God who keeps his promises. |
