In these days of smaller nuclear families, it's apparent that people who are bringing up children and teenagers (both parents and grandparents) could do with some support. Parenting is a rewarding job but not an easy one, and unfortunately a newborn baby doesn't come with an instruction book! Being a skilled parent doesn't come automatically - parents often struggle to know how to deal with the ever-changing young people in their care.

Being told what to do by "parenting experts" isn't the answer for most parents - there are other ways to help parents feel better about the job they're doing, and learn how to do it better. One of these is Parentalk, created by a Christian organisation here in the UK called Care for the Family. Parentalk gives parents the chance to share their experiences and to learn from and support one another. It's done by small groups of parents getting together for a couple of hours each week for 8 weeks, to discuss common experiences and dilemmas and look at some ways to cope with them. Each session includes watching a few short video clips and there is lots of discussion, where everyone has the chance to take part. Everyone in the group also gets a magazine about the issues covered in the course - it's used in each session and is a reminder afterwards of the ideas that the group discussed.

After running and evaluating a pilot Parentalk group in the first half of 2004, St Andrew's now offers Parentalk to the wider community; anyone who is fulfilling a parenting role for a child or young person is very welcome to come along. Groups are held in response to demand, both during the day and in the evening. For more information contact the church office.
