In terms of a practical response to homelessness, St Andrew's supports the
work of Starter Packs Angus and Furniture Recycling Project Angus. Starter Packs
Angus provides packs of household goods to people who move into a new tenancy
with few possessions or the means to acquire them; Furniture Recycling Project
Angus, as the name indicates, provides donated furniture for those who are setting
up house.
Starter Packs needs volunteers who can do the following on a regular or occasional
basis:
- Sorting/packing - work at the Starter Packs unit in Dens Rd to receive,
sort and store donated goods and make up starter packs. Opening hours are
10am-2pm Tuesday-Thursday.
- Driving (within Arbroath) - pick up donated goods from people in Arbroath
who don't have transport.
- Driving (within Angus) - pick up packs from the Starter Packs unit and deliver
them to a collection point in another Angus town - would suit people who already
make regular trips for work etc.
- Washing - wash donated crockery, cutlery, cookware, bed linen etc. at home.
(NB: nothing heavily soiled, but sometimes items which have been stored in
attics etc. for a while need freshening up before being put into a starter
pack.)
- Sewing - cut down full size sheets to make cot bedding at home.
- Publicising - use contacts within Angus churches, community groups and businesses
(particularly outwith Arbroath) to distribute leaflets, invite a speaker to
talk about Starter Packs, raise funds etc.
Both projects need a continuous supply of good-quality donated goods - so keep
them in mind if you're having a cleanout or see a special at the shops, and
spread the word about both projects.
