Fairtrade

» Opportunities for Service » Fairtrade Action

Fairtrade - an opportunity to "think global and act local". Not everyone can devote their lives to solving the "big issues", but everyone has to eat and drink! When you buy a Fairtrade product, it gives a better deal to the farmer or craftworker who produced it. It also says that you care about creating a fairer world trading system - and care enough to put your money where your mouth is. Each Fairtrade purchase is a vote for a fairer world.

The Arbroath Fairtrade Action Group is working hard to promote Fairtrade in our town, and has gained unanimous support from Angus Council and a commitment from them to choose Fairtrade goods in their own purchasing wherever possible.

What can you do to further the cause of Fairtrade? Choosing Fairtrade products in your own shopping is an obvious step - Safeway, all 4 Co-op stores and Oyster Crafts all stock a range of goodies. Here are a few more suggestions which are literally bite-sized! :

AT HOME: invite your friends and neighbours around for a Fair Trade morning tea or after-dinner coffee.
AT WORK: find out who buys the tea and coffee that's served in your workplace and ask them to consider using Fair Trade products. Or share your own with your workmates.
AT SCHOOL/COLLEGE: ask your tuckshop or cafeteria to stock Fair Trade snack bars - tell them that chocolate and muesli bars are good brain food!
ON A SPECIAL OCCASION: celebrate with a Fair Trade bottle of wine, or a gift voucher from Oyster Crafts.
GET INVOLVED: the Fairtrade Action Group is working towards making Arbroath a Fairtrade Town. Volunteer a bit of time and energy to help with Fair Trade promotions, or make a donation towards the cost of events.
Oyster Crafts shop also has need of more volunteers to staff the shop (regular or backup rota) or to help with stalls at various events.
