Sunday 9th November saw us joining with churches across the nation in an Act of Remembrance – all the more special this year with the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WW1. In what proved to be both a powerful and poignant service, we were delighted to have special representation from the Boys brigade, The local Lifeboat Crew and Major Speedie from 45 Commando,  Royal Marine Condor. Those in uniform added a special layer to the service as we remembered together all those who gave their lives in the great wars and in the all-too-many conflicts since. Of real interest was our WW1 ‘Remembering Table.’ Members of the congregation had been invited to bring artefacts that they had, dating from the 1914-1918 war. Medals, pictures, letters, newspaper cuttings and helmets made up the collection, together with the British Legion’s ‘Roll of Honour’ book which details all those from Arbroath who died in these years. Combined with the beautiful and moving poppy display that Margaret McIntosh had created, the Church really was at its best.

While it is the right thing to do to remember, it’s good also that we look forward and commit ourselves afresh to working for a more peaceful world. To that end, we move forward.
