Though there are times when we should pray alone, the New Testament makes it clear that the early Christians met to pray together… frequently (Acts 1:14) and, therefore, so should we! Chief among our times of praying together at St. Andrew’s is the Thursday evening gathering, 7-8pm. Our prayer meetings are continuing over the summer. Why not join us?

Thursday 28th May 2015

Congregation

• Remember in your prayers those of our brothers and sisters who are suffering ill-health or have been bereaved at this time
• Pray for this coming Sunday. We’re expecting up to 100 guests for a double baptism! – largely un-churched families. Our guests speaker, Mark Fleming, is a natural evangelist; pray that God might use him especially this week
• The Dunphy’s leave for Malawi tomorrow. Pray for safe travel and for a trip that proves to be worthwhile on every level
• Pray for this Saturday when, through the morning, we’re running a Polar Explorers Re-United event for the children we worked with during the holiday club. Also, there’s to be a soup lunch for parents to join us at afterwards. Pray for continued building of relationships
• Give thanks that Adele has now started as our new Youth Worker – we will formally commission her on Sunday. Pray that God would enrich and equip her for all that lies in store

Church at Large

• Although majority Christian, S.Sudan has declared itself a secular state. Muslims from Kenya and Uganda are becoming S.Sudanese citizens.  One Christian leader remarked recently, ‘The Church needs to be enlightened, empowered and envisioned for the task.’ Pray for this
• Eritrea still has hundreds of Christians imprisoned in military camps and metal shipping containers. Many receive only one meagre meal a day.  Pray for 32 yr. old Christian, Twen, active in caring for her fellow prisoners
• With John Chalmers having given up his duties as Moderator, pray for him and Liz as they return to some kind of normality. Pray too for his successor, Angus Morrison

Community

• Continue to pray for our work at Havilah. Several young men are getting near to the point where John Wilson has reached – clean, in work and moving forward. Rejoice in this but pray for those who are still struggling and for those stuck in chaotic situations
• Next week, we run ‘Popcorn ‘n’ Cake,’ little brother to the Easter Code! We are expecting over 100 p5 children from three schools. Pray for Stuart who is leading and for the overall success of this venture

Nation

• With examples of dishonesty and deception among politicians once more to the fore (Alastair Carmichael) and the practice of phone-hacking by the media back in court (Andy Coulson,) pray for Christians in civic life that they would offer wonderful examples of honesty and integrity
• A new drug called “Spice” is causing havoc in the US. It is made of synthetic marijuana and causes violent mood changes.  Last week 5 UK students were in hospital after smoking Spice. Pray against the spread of this dangerous drug

World

• UNHCR estimates that 42,000 have fled Burundi’s in-fighting for Tanzania. No water or latrines in the area where they now are, means that at least 100 people are dying from cholera every day
• Many people are still struggling with only the most basic resources following the earthquakes in Nepal. Pray for the ongoing work of relief agencies as they survey the scene and plan ways to rebuild shattered infrastructure
• Iraqi forces are preparing an assault on IS forces around the strategically important city of Ramadi. Pray against extremist forces which threaten only mayhem and bloodshed
• The Republic of Ireland has voted for same sex marriages. May those that oppose this not resort to violence but exhibit love whilst still standing for what they feel are Christian values
